Hyperthyroidism is a disorder related to thyroid glands. When someone has hyperthyroidism, their thyroid gland excess thyroid hormones than the body needs.  Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. It is more prevalent in women than in men.
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of your neck. It produces T4 and T3 harmones  which are two primary hormones that control how your cells use energy. Moreover, thyroid gland regulates metabolism through the release of these hormones. Given that, hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid makes too much T4, T3, or both.

  2. Excess iodine, a key ingredient in T4 and T3

  3. Thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid

  4. Benign tumors of the thyroid or pituitary gland

  5. Large amounts of tetraiodothyronine taken through dietary supplements or medication


Symptoms


The symptoms for hyperthyroidism can be varied. Sometimes, it is felt through rapid increase in heart rate which can be easily observed by the patient. Whereas, some other times we need to go to clinic and check our blood pressure. The elevated blood pressure might be because of hyperthyroidism. Following are some of the common symptoms, please note that a person can experience multiple symptoms together

  1. Hand tremors

  2. Sweat a lot and low tolerance for heat

  3. More frequent bowel movements

  4. In women, irregular menstrual cycles

  5. Nervousness, restlessness, inability to concentrate, difficulty sleeping

  6. Weakness

  7. Irregular heartbeat

  8. Fine, brittle hair, itching, hair loss

  9. Nausea and vomiting

  10. Breast development in men
